KATE JOHNSTON

An award winning embroidery artist creating original art pieces as well as bespoke commissions for film, events and interiors.

Kate uses the medium of embroidery to examine the fears and foibles of humanity, juxtaposed with the fierce resilience and power of nature.

Botanical forms provide endless inspiration, she seeks to bring to life intricate leaf structures and markings with the play of light on thread. A born magpie, she is continually drawn to shimmer, iridescence, and a rich colour palette.

The goal is to draw in those who see her work to look more closely, and enjoy the revelation of the finer details as their perspective shifts.

About me

“Having originally trained as a saddle maker and leather worker, in 2015 I transitioned into creative roles within the film industry. I began as a costume maker on productions such as the Downton Abbey movie, where I specialised in making the iconic silk evening gloves for Dame Maggie Smith among others.

I later moved into the world of Drapery, bringing my high levels of attention to detail and love of fine craftsmanship to the scenic world. Notable productions include The Barbie Movie, Paddington in Peru and Gladiator II. It was during this work in film that I built on existing skills and learnt new ones, such as upholstery and digital embroidery, that continue to influence and inform my art practice today.

In November 2024 I won both the Hand & Lock Prize for Digital Embroidery, and the Design Trust Award for ‘The most promising professional embroiderer’. I aim to use these opportunities to continue to innovate and push the boundaries of what can be achieved with digital embroidery.”
